S 510 and HR 875, food legislation introduced following salmonella outbreaks, currently pend before the 111th (now "lame duck") Congress, although the bills may not be voted on before the 112th Congress takes over.

In addition to computerized record-keeping by those involved in food production, beginning with the farmer, in order to track food from its origin in the fields, the legislation will require growers to pay fees for inspection as well as recalls. Fees will also be collected from importers.

S 510 is the more likely of the two to be voted on. It requires Health and Human Services to "promulgate regulations for establishing science-based standards" for growers, food processors, and importers for conducting hazard analyses, implementing preventive controls, and documenting these. HR 875 establishes a Food Safety Administration (FSA) under the Department of Health and Human Services – a working group on food-borne illness surveillance – and hopes to track food from farm to table.
