Maintenance Contracts

The importance of taking maintenance medications for people with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) such as Crohn's and ulcerative colitis cannot be overemphasized. Staying on maintenance medications can cut down on the number and severity of flare-ups a person with these chronic diseases will experience during his or her lifetime. There are several different classes of maintenance medications useful for coping with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Steroid Medications for Crohn's and Colitis

Steroids such as prednisone are most often used for inflammatory bowel disease during times of acute flare-ups. They reduce inflammation and help the person return to a state of remission. Some people with IBD have difficulty weaning off prednisone without going right back into another flare-up. Yet chronic steroid use has undesirable side effects, so most gastroenterologists strive to help their patients get along without them for the longest possible intervals. However, if a patient seems unable to stay in remission without taking steroids, budesonide pills may be a good solution. Budesonide, another steroid, is far safer for long-term use than prednisone.
